Seudah Shlishit Season Is Nearly Here!

A wonderful part of Muswell Hill communal life is our annual Seudah Shlishit (third meal) season, which begins on the first Shabbat of the Torah cycle – Shabbat Bereishit and continues until Pesach.

We all know about having meals on Shabbat – but lesser known is the idea of having a third meal on the Shabbat. The Talmud takes a look at the verses in the Torah that discuss the children of Israel’s gathering of the manna in the desert. It notes that when manna was gathered for the Shabbat, the Torah three times refers to ‘today’ a term referring to the Shabbat day. From this is then learned that the Torah is implying partaking of three meals on the Shabbat. One in the evening, one in the morning and one towards the end of Shabbat. Seudah (which means meal) Shlishit (third) is a more quiet, reflective time and always retains a calm atmosphere.

We are proud of our Seudah Shlishit season, which gives members from across the community a chance to sponsor the meal (you can sponsor it in the memory of a family member who passed away) and also for a member of the sponsoring family to give a small talk (about 5 minutes) on a Jewish connected topic of their choice. It could be about the parasha. But it could be about a topic that interests them; an Israel related topic or even about a trip somewhere in the world where the Jewish community was encountered. If someone would not want to speak, you can nominate somewhere else, or even myself!

So please do be in touch to sponsor.  Click on the link below to see the shopping list detailing what to buy if you are a sponsor and, similarly, for a list of dates that are available.  There is a reduced list if this is needed which can be obtained from the Shul Office.  If you would like any advice on which Shabbat to choose, or would like to book a Shabbat, please email me on
