Cheder

Muswell Hill Cheder reopened in 1997 with just a handful of children. Since then we have grown to over 80 children but we still retain the warmth and sense of community that makes this a very special place.  We want the children to discover that Judaism is enjoyable by learning about it in a fun way.

Our Mission

To promote a love, knowledge and practice of Judaism in a creative and fun way.

Lilmod ulelamed lishmor vela'asot…be'ahavah

To teach, to learn with all your being and with kindness

Our Structure:

In Years 1-6 our pupils follow a Hebrew reading scheme called Aleph Champ which encourages them to move up different coloured 'belts' as they progress. .

Year 1: Children are taught through song, arts and crafts and gentle encouragement and ensures that our youngest class settle in well to the cheder and most importantly are happy.

Year 2: Class 2 is taught by Hannah Kirsch and begin to learn more about the practises of Judaism as well as to read Hebrew.

Year 3: In class 3 the children begin their shul project and learn about the shabbat service. This will help them feel confident and at home at the shul.

Year 4: By this stage in the Cheder, children are starting to learn more about the Jewish lifecycle and to understand and experience its rituals.

Year 5 and Year 6: In these classes, children are gaining a deeper understanding of Torah values and the deeper meanings of Jewish practice.

Challenge (Year 7)  This is an exciting and dynamic way for young people to continue their Jewish learning by taking part in various challenges. A full programme for Challenge is available from the head. (This program will not run in 2010/2011)

Year 8:This is a brand new program devloped by Rabbi David and our Head Teacher. It splits the morning into 2 parts; Jewish thought - during whcih the pupils encounter Jewish aproaches to modern problems, and Jewish culture - which includes a practical ulpan (learning Hebrew as a living language)

GCSE (Year 9/10):  This is a two year programme and can be joined in either year. Pupils study for the OCR World Religions (A) exam.
