WHO APPOINTS THE JUDGES?
And how diverse are they?
Talk by Deborah Cohen
Deborah – who many of us know as an active member of Muswell Hill Synagogue – has had a career in education and now also sits as a panel chair for the Judicial Appointments Commission. She will tell us about her diverse professional background and her work on the body that selects candidates for judicial office at all levels in England and Wales, as well as selecting many Tribunals with UK-wide powers.
Deborah will talk about her involvement in the judicial appointment process and the commission’s ongoing mission to widen the diversity of the judiciary.
Deborah was born and raised in Liverpool and moved to London after university. She spent her teaching career in Barnet, where she became Inclusion Advisory Lead for the borough and led on the introduction of new legislation for Special Educational Needs, across education, health and social care. She has worked for the JAC for a number of years, a role she combines with her own education consultancy. She has also written two books on social skills for young children, is a school governor and volunteers on an advice line for parents of children with special educational needs.
All women and girls welcome.
