Muswell Hill Foodbank

On November 4th 2017, Pastor Victor Mason of the Muswell Hill Foodbank addressed the community as our ‘Shabbat on the Hill’ speaker.

Victor talked about the growing level of food poverty in the country and even in Muswell Hill. The local foodbank serves in the region of 25-30 clients a week offering a friendly welcome, coffee, cake (baked by our shul members), soup and emergency food packages. The foodbank hands out in the region of 2,000kg of food each month which is supported by donations of cash and food.

The Trussell Trust, which is the largest foodbank network in the country, have just highlighted the growth in need for emergency food supplies, they said:

“We’re seeing soaring demand at foodbanks across the UK. This week we released new figures which show 586,907 emergency food supplies were given to people in crisis between April and September this year – a 13% increase compared to the same period the year before. 208,956 of these went to children.”

The Muswell Hill Foodbank was one of the charities that we supported through our Kol Nidre 2017 Appeal. Several members of MHS volunteer at the foodbank or donate food, we will be doing a food collection at a supermarket as part of our Mitzvah Day activities. There is a basket in the lobby of the synagogue into which you can place any non perishable items of food (tins or packets that are ‘in date’).
