Hebron: The Tensions Between the National and Family Stories and a Holy Site and Place of Conflict

Rabbi David talks about how Avraham buys the plot of land in Hebron to bury his wife Sarah. He discusses the how the tension between the family story and national story mirrors the tension with which we look at the modern city of Hebron: It is both an intensely holy place where the founders of our religion, the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, are buried and it is also a place of intense conflict, with a small enclave of national-religious Jews and a large population of Palestinian residents.
Also a shout out to Robin Moss in a discussion of the difficulty of educating ourselves and our children about the complexity of these tensions.
